SUMMARY:Foodomics: How Knowing More About What’s in our Foods will Lead to a New Nutrition
DESCRIPTION:Please join Emily Hill MS\, RDN at the 2024 Indiana Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics Annual Meeting. In this presentation\, attendees will learn about the pros and cons of existing dietary assessment methods. The concept of nutritional metabolomics will be introduced\, and the potential of foodomics (the metabolomics of foods) will be highlighted through discussion of findings from several human clinical studies. Specifically\, the presenter will describe how the measurement of the compounds in our foods may be a useful approach for identifying new biomarkers of dietary exposure to foods\, food groups\, and overall dietary patterns such as a DASH or Mediterranean diet. Data will be presented to demonstrate how foodomics can be used to explore: (1) how foods group together based on chemical composition\, (2) compounds that are associated with consumption of specific foods\, and (3) components within our foods that may be related to changes in cardiometabolic health. Future directions will include potential applications to precision nutrition approaches and clinical dietetics practice.  \n  \nLearning objectives: \nAfter this session\, attendees will be able to:  \n\nList strengths and limitations of current dietary assessment methods \nDescribe the application of metabolomics to nutrition studies for identification of biomarkers of exposure \nExplain how new approaches to measuring foods can be used for precision nutrition and applied to dietetics practice

SUMMARY:Eating Beyond the Headlines: Sorting Evidence from Emotion
DESCRIPTION:Alarming food and nutrition headlines not only confuse consumers but may also result in the exclusion of nutrient-rich foods from the diet. Nutrition and health recommendations should be based on the scientific evidence and not the results of a single study heralded in the media. This can be challenging especially for topics that evoke strongly held and emotional beliefs that often defy scientific reality. \nJoin Neva Cochran\, MS\, RDN\, LD\, FAND during the Idaho Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics 2024 Annual Meeting for an engaging discussion that will examine some of the current popular nutrition topics in the news and the real scientific facts behind them.  \nLearning Objectives\n1. Critically evaluate and identify the scientific facts behind popular nutrition myths in the media.\n2. Explain the nutritional consequences of omitting specific foods from the diet that have been vilified in the media.\n3. Communicate effectively with audiences to dispel food myths and fears promoted in the media. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Snooze-Fest vs Going Viral: The Art of Crafting Effective\, Research-Based Content for Any Platform
DESCRIPTION:Food and nutrition are hot topics on every digital platform today ranging from Instagram and TikTok to print media outlets and podcasts. Yet\, it’s tough to get credible\, research-based messaging heard over other trendy content — that may or may not be accurate science-based. This means effective communication is critical for dietitians to get our voices heard. But how do you create attention-grabbing posts\, videos\, articles\, and podcasts rooted in research-based science? Is it even possible to craft viral messaging that’s rooted in research-based science?   \nJoin Carolyn Williams\, PhD\, RD at the 2024 Pennsylvania Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Annual Meeting and Exhibition for an engaging presentation. \nLearning Objectives:  \n\nIdentify nutrition and health topics that have the greatest potential to resonate with your audience. \nIdentify the most effective communication platforms for your audience.  \nList approaches for crafting food\, nutrition\, and health content that attracts your audience. \nList the most common mistakes made in nutrition and health communication.   \nUnderstand how to frame content using nutrition and health research that’s dynamic enough to go viral\, get thousands of downloads\, and even win awards.  \n\n

SUMMARY:Doing More with Less: Cooking Techniques to Save Hundreds of Dollars a Month
DESCRIPTION:Between the rising cost of fuel\, housing\, and food\, our wallets are taking a major hit this year. Unfortunately\, we don’t have a lot of control when it comes to fuel and housing\, but we can control how much money we spend on food. Instead of resorting to cheaper\, processed foods that lead to a reduction in food quality and increased rates of obesity\, we can teach a few key budget cooking skills to save hundreds of dollars a month and the health of our patients and their families. In this presentation\, we’ll delve into 3 simple but proven effective cooking techniques that reduce waste\, improve diet status\, and most importantly\, make food delicious at home. Presented by Breana Lai Killeen\, MPH\, RD\, the former Test Kitchen Manager for EatingWell Magazine and Le Cordon Bleu trained chef.   \nObjectives:   \n\nTo address the rising cost of food and ways to reduce grocery bills.  \nTo learn 3 cooking techniques that reduce food waste\, improve flavor\, and increase yield of home-cooked food. \nTo discuss food preservation methods that extend the shelf-life of healthy food.

SUMMARY:Food Science vs. Food Philosophy: Communicating the Difference & Handling The Questions
DESCRIPTION:There is never an end to highly controversial topics in the world of food and nutrition. But too often popular opinions and trends get ahead of the science and facts. If nutrition professionals are to be the trusted sources\, we need to be able to both know the science and how to best communicate the evidence in a way that increases consumers’ trust.  Controversies such as eating for the planet\, plant-based eating patterns\, GMOs and organic vs. conventionally raised foods. Join Keith Ayoob EdD\, RD\, FADA\, CD/N as he presents at the New York Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Annual Meeting and Expo. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nSpeak with clients/patients objectively & factually about high-emotion topics.\nLearn how to minimize bias in their communications about high-emotion topics.\nCommunicate the science in ways that build trust from clients and other audiences.
